Multi-Blade Savonius

Re: Multi-Blade Savonius, large ID bearing

Hi, because I am increasing the blade length I have to install a blade support bearing. Fabrication was not difficult but I do not know how long it will last. Bearing ID is 4.26 inches and will fit beneath the PMA and ride on the PVC mast supporting the blade evenly during rotation. This idea is inspired from other posts on this forum. Comments welcomes.

Hi, I purchased ¾ bearing balls and fabricated new bearing housing. I am using a 4 inch PVC coupler as a shaft collar. After I added some high temp grease the bearing spins freely and has a reduced noise signature. Spinning the assembly manually on the test fixture it is very stable and appears only one assembly will be needed for the lower blade rotor. The cost of a large ID bearing is over $500 US and at this time it appears to be a cost affective solution.

Greetings, I have not posted in while. This is a project update. I am trying to increase my output at a lower RPM. The current VAWT configuration I am testing is a 6 blade J shape. I am using a stock F&P PMA.

12 coils per phase,
3 phase WYE
belt drive is 1 to 4.25 ratio
Starts to spin at 2 m/s
at about 3 m/s VOC is 50 AC

There is very little wind this season so I do not have any data that I can post at this time.

I am building another VAWT that is a 5 blade hybrid of a C rotor and a Lenz. Has anyone tried a similar blade configuration?

Hi, just a quick photo of V3MPPT test board. The second version will hopefully look better. I am using light switches to disconnect the turbine input. I am trying to keep the inductor leads as short as possible. Just had a 21 MPH wind and VOC was about 256 AC. It looks like I need faster blades.

I completed all the basic mounts and connections. I need to purchase 12 volt DC loads for out0 and out1. I think at this time I should be able to connect the battery and test the software.

It looks funky but it should be ok.

Hi, graph show manual operation of direct drive stock F&P. 60 RPM max. I added a 1 to 2.5 timing belt drive and I am using a VAWT with a 5 blade configuration. Waiting for wind… I will post results when available.

Project update, waiting for wind. Dual blade configuration, hoping to reduce load that transmission adds to the system
